Formula 1 has announced a 24-race calendar for the 2027 season featuring 10 sprint race weekends — the most ever staged in a single season — including an unexpected first-ever sprint format at the Monaco Grand Prix. The season opens on March 14 with a sprint round in Bahrain and closes with the Abu Dhabi finale on December 12, also a sprint weekend.
Portugal and Turkey return to the schedule after lengthy absences — Portugal at the Portimão circuit on June 20 and Turkey at Istanbul on October 3. Offsetting those additions, the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona-Catalunya and the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort both drop off the 2027 calendar. Barcelona will return in 2028 under a new rotation arrangement with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, while Formula 1 has confirmed there are no current plans for Zandvoort to return.
Why Monaco Is Getting a Sprint Race
The addition of a sprint weekend at Monaco is the most surprising element of the 2027 calendar. The tight street circuit is famous for producing little overtaking, making the concept of a competitive sprint race there seem counterintuitive. Formula 1 sources indicated that the sport believes adding a second qualifying session at Monaco — the standard sprint format replaces two practice sessions with sprint qualifying and a sprint race — will generate value by producing two separate grid orders for the sprint and the main grand prix. Qualifying has historically been considered the highlight of the Monaco weekend, partly because it so often determines the Sunday finishing order. The sprint format adds a third competitive element.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has consistently pushed to expand the sprint format, citing viewer data. Formula 1 says total viewership of sprint weekends is 12% higher than non-sprint weekends, sprint qualifying is up to three times more popular with fans than free practice sessions, 82% of sprint weekend attendees say the format adds value to their ticket, and 75% of F1 fans believe sprint events add greater value to the season.
The Season in Context
The calendar was announced despite ongoing uncertainty in the region. The final two rounds of the 2026 season — Qatar on November 29 and Abu Dhabi on December 6 — remain under potential threat due to security concerns linked to the US-Israel war on Iran, with Imola held as a contingency venue if either race cannot proceed. Earlier in 2026, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia rounds of the current season were cancelled due to the conflict and the Bahrain race was rescheduled to Malaysia.
