Liverpool have a frontrunner in their search for a new head coach — and it is the man who just guided Bournemouth to European football for the first time in the club’s history. Andoni Iraola, 43, is the leading candidate to succeed Arne Slot at Anfield, sources have confirmed, with a combination of Premier League credentials, immediate availability, and a significant personal connection to Liverpool’s sporting director making him the standout name in the race.
Slot was fired on Saturday after two years in charge at Anfield. Liverpool’s hierarchy has made clear they intend to assess the market thoroughly before making a final decision, but sources say Iraola has already pulled ahead of the field for several compelling reasons.
Why Iraola Fits What Liverpool Are Looking For
The starting point is football philosophy. Slot’s dismissal was driven in part by Liverpool’s desire to play a more aggressive, high-energy, pressing-based style of football. Iraola’s Bournemouth was built precisely on those principles — the Cherries became one of the most physically intense teams in the Premier League under his management, ending a historic season by securing Europa League qualification. That is exactly the DNA Liverpool’s decision-makers want to bring to Anfield.

The personal connection matters equally. Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes worked directly with Iraola when he performed a similar role at Bournemouth, hiring the Spaniard in 2023. That established working relationship means Liverpool already know how Iraola operates — his demands from a sporting structure, his communication style, his transfer philosophy, and his management approach. In a process where risk is inherent, that familiarity carries enormous weight.
Iraola is also available immediately, having left Bournemouth at the end of the season. There would be no compensation package to negotiate, no release clause to trigger, no existing club to negotiate with. He could begin work at Anfield without delay.
The salary question, which contributed to his Bournemouth departure — the club was unable to meet his £10 million-a-year demand — is not expected to be an issue at Liverpool, where Slot was on a comparable package. Sources confirm Liverpool regard Iraola as a rising star of European coaching, noting that the club assessed him four years ago as a potential long-term successor to Jurgen Klopp when he was still at Rayo Vallecano.
Two other candidates have admirers within the Anfield hierarchy — VfB Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness and RC Lens coach Pierre Sage have both attracted interest. But neither carries the Premier League experience or the direct personal connection to Liverpool’s sporting director that Iraola does. For now, the former Rayo Vallecano coach is firmly in pole position.
