GTA 6 Extended Preview: Everything We Learned From Rockstar’s 26-Minute Gameplay Showcase

GTA 6

After more than 18 months without an official glimpse, Rockstar Games released a 26-minute extended preview of Grand Theft Auto 6 on Thursday — debuting exclusively on Netflix before going live on YouTube six hours later. The footage, shown without commentary or explanatory captions, gave fans their most detailed look yet at the game ahead of its November 19th launch.

The preview followed a difficult week for Rockstar — the developer said it had been “heartbreaking” to see unauthorised gameplay leaks circulate online. Thursday’s showcase was the company’s opportunity to present the game on its own terms, and by most accounts it delivered something that exceeded expectations.

Jason and Lucia — The Bonnie and Clyde at the Heart of GTA 6

The most significant story detail the preview confirmed is how central the relationship between the two protagonists — Jason Duval and Lucia Camino — is to the game’s structure. The pair are a couple at the centre of a “Bonnie and Clyde”-style criminal narrative, and the preview spent significant time illustrating their dynamic. In one sequence, Jason was shown lowering Lucia from a window during a drug bust escape.

According to an IGN interview with Rockstar developers, the characters’ relationship and how it evolves can be shaped by the player’s choices — though players can opt out of developing the bond entirely. The preview also showed the ability to switch control between the two characters at different points in the game, building on the three-protagonist switching system introduced in GTA 5.

The Graphics — “The Best-Looking Game I’ve Ever Seen”

Praise for GTA 6’s visual presentation was close to universal among those who watched the preview. Characters displayed photorealistic faces and lifelike movement. Detailed interior environments — apartments, rooftop bars, underground clubs — were shown in depth alongside varied outdoor landscapes. The fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida, includes Vice City, an area drawing on Miami that revisits the setting of the beloved 2002 game.

The variety of body shapes and sizes among background characters attracted particular attention, a level of visual diversity rarely seen in open-world games. Game journalist Ryan McCaffrey described it as “might be the best-looking game I’ve ever seen.”

The visual quality is attributed to both the game’s extended development timeline and what is believed to be one of the largest production budgets in video game history. According to YouTuber TGG, who claims Rockstar invited him to its Edinburgh headquarters, developers told him GTA 6’s map is approximately twice the size of GTA 5’s — though Rockstar has not officially confirmed that figure.

Still Grand Theft Auto at Its Core

Despite the technical leap, the preview made clear that GTA 6 is recognisably and deliberately a Grand Theft Auto game. Armed heists, high-speed car chases, criminal underworld storylines, dark satire of American culture, and a vast menu of optional side activities were all on display. Rockstar appears to have expanded the reputation and honour system it introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, which allows other characters to respond differently based on the player’s behaviour.

The series has sold an estimated half a billion copies since its 1997 debut. GTA 5 alone has sold more than 200 million copies since its 2013 release and remains one of the most-played games on multiple platforms.

What We Still Don’t Know

The preview was dedicated to single-player story and gameplay. Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 will launch as a single-player experience, with no online component at launch — leaving fans to assume a multiplayer mode will arrive post-launch. GTA Online, which launched after GTA 5, remains one of the most-played games in the world and is estimated to have generated billions of dollars in revenue. The long-term commercial success of GTA 6 will depend heavily on how successfully Rockstar builds on that model.

Two official trailers for GTA 6 have accumulated nearly 500 million combined views on YouTube. The November 19th launch is widely expected to become the biggest in video game history.

On a separate note, Rockstar’s parent company is due to appear at an employment tribunal in Scotland next month to defend itself against claims it illegally dismissed a group of former employees for attempting to form a union. The company strongly denies the allegations, saying the workers were dismissed on grounds of gross misconduct.
