House Democrats Say Trump Turned America’s 250th Birthday Into a “Hotbed of Corruption and Self-Enrichment”

House Democrats have released a 55-page report accusing President Trump of transforming America’s 250th anniversary into what they call a “hotbed of corruption and self-enrichment,” channelling federal funds through a shadow organisation with ties to the White House while sidelining the bipartisan commission Congress had originally authorised for the celebrations.

The report, published Thursday by Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee and titled “From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People out of their 250th Birthday,” focuses on Freedom 250 — the public-private partnership incorporated under the National Park Foundation in October 2025 that has become the dominant organiser of this summer’s highest-profile anniversary events. It describes the organisation as “a shadow organisation capable of infiltrating the celebrations and injecting America’s 250th with Trump’s extreme, partisan agenda.”

Representative Jared Huffman of California, the committee’s ranking Democrat, told reporters the investigation was months in the making, drawing on unnamed whistleblowers, sworn Congressional testimony, internal Freedom 250 documents, and other written records. “We put it all together to really tell the story of how Donald Trump hijacked what should have been a unifying national celebration and repurposed it for his own interests,” Huffman said.

Freedom 250 dismissed the report entirely. Spokesperson Danielle Alvarez called it “categorically false” and a “partisan smear,” saying the organisation “stepped in to rescue our nation’s 250th birthday from years of wasted time, wasted money, and failed planning.” The White House referred a request for comment to Freedom 250. Freedom 250 said it does not speak for the White House.

The Specific Allegations

The report’s most serious allegation concerns money. Congress allocated $150 million to the Interior Department last year for 250th anniversary events, with an understood $100 million intended for America250 — the nonpartisan commission Congress created in 2016 for this specific purpose. America250 has reportedly received only $25 million. The rest, Democrats allege, has been redirected toward Freedom 250’s programming and the contractors connected to it.

Freedom 250 disputes any characterisation of diversion, saying no funds were specifically earmarked for one entity over the other.

Independent analysis by Public Citizen and the Revolving Door Project found that of more than $120 million in public funds directed toward anniversary celebrations, over $100 million has gone to projects and entities with ties to the Trump administration. Federal contracts have directed tens of millions of dollars to Event Strategies, Inc. — the company that helped organise Trump’s January 6th rally outside the US Capitol in 2021.

The report also alleges potential wire fraud. According to Democrats, donors who believed they were contributing to America250 — the nonpartisan commission — were given banking information for Freedom 250 instead. “Donations solicited in the name of the nation’s nonpartisan birthday foundation were routed instead to the President’s substitute entity,” the report states. Freedom 250 said all major sponsors received documentation identifying Freedom 250 as the recipient before funds were transferred.

Additional concerns in the report include solicitation of foreign funds — Freedom 250 CEO Keith Krach, a former Trump administration official, appeared to invite international participation while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos — the sale of access to the president through sponsorship packages culminating in photo opportunities with Trump, and an opaque donor structure that conceals the identities of contributors and the benefits they may have been promised.

What Has Freedom 250 Actually Done?

Freedom 250 has organised several of the summer’s most visible anniversary events, including a UFC fight outside the White House in June, a state fair on the National Mall, a July Fourth fireworks show opening with a Trump rally, and the “Patriot Games” high school athletic competition scheduled for August. Several of these events — including a prayer gathering on the National Mall — have drawn criticism for presenting a narrowly sanitised view of American history and incorporating an explicitly Christian religious agenda.

Critics note that this was not the original vision. Congress created America250 in 2016 as a bipartisan commission explicitly designed to keep the 250th anniversary above partisan politics. Democratic critics and watchdog groups say Trump created Freedom 250 after unsuccessful attempts to stack America250’s leadership with his own allies.

The result, according to the report, is that the anniversary has been shaped primarily by a private LLC operating under limited transparency obligations, rather than a publicly accountable commission subject to bipartisan oversight and public reporting requirements. “Once you siphon off the funds and supplant the real bipartisan commission with this new entity,” Huffman said, “you can do anything you want.”

The report has not been adopted formally by the full Natural Resources Committee. Republicans on the panel have declined to conduct oversight into Freedom 250 despite repeated Democratic requests. Huffman said his investigation will continue after July 4th and that subpoenas or criminal referrals remain possible if Democrats regain the House in the autumn midterms.
