One of the most beloved video games of the modern era is making its way to the big screen — and it is arriving with serious firepower behind it.
A24’s live-action adaptation of Elden Ring has officially begun production in the United Kingdom this week, with a newly expanded cast that reads like a who’s who of contemporary cinema. The film, written and directed by Alex Garland, is the most ambitious and expensive project in A24’s history — and by a considerable margin.
A Cast That Demands Attention
The core cast, which already included Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, and Nick Offerman, has now been rounded out with a stellar group of additions: Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz.
The ensemble is as eclectic as it is talented. Jonathan Pryce, the veteran actor known to millions for his portrayal of Prince Philip in Netflix’s The Crown, brings gravitas and authority to the production. Sonoya Mizuno — who made a striking early impression in Garland’s directorial debut Ex Machina — reunites with the director in what feels like a full-circle moment. Mizuno is also a familiar face to fantasy fans through her role in HBO’s House of the Dragon.
Tom Burke, fresh from appearances in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and the thriller Black Bag, joins the fold alongside Emma Laird, who previously worked with Garland on the 28 Years Later films. Jefferson Hall, who played a Lannister in House of the Dragon and appeared in Oppenheimer, adds further weight to an already impressive lineup. Peter Serafinowicz, known to comic book fans from Amazon’s The Tick and for his roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and John Wick: Chapter 2, rounds out a cast that spans genres, generations, and continents.
Alex Garland at the Helm
The choice of Alex Garland as writer and director is one of the most exciting creative decisions A24 could have made. The filmmaker behind Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men, and the recent Civil War has built a reputation for intelligent, visually striking genre cinema that operates on a level above what audiences typically expect from big-budget productions.
Civil War briefly held the title of A24’s most expensive film before being surpassed. Now Garland finds himself at the helm of something even larger — a production with a budget reported to be well over $100 million and a shooting schedule of around 100 days. For a studio that built its reputation on lower-budget, auteur-driven projects, this represents a genuine evolution.
The World of Elden Ring
For those unfamiliar with the source material, Elden Ring is a dark fantasy role-playing game developed by Japanese studio FromSoftware under the creative direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki — and crucially, built on a mythological story co-written by George R. R. Martin, the author of Game of Thrones.
The game is set in a mythical realm called the Lands Between, where a powerful artifact known as the Elden Ring has been shattered, plunging the world into war, chaos, and darkness. Players take on the role of a Tarnished — a banished warrior who returns to the Lands Between with the task of gathering the shards of the Elden Ring and restoring order to a fractured world filled with dragons, castles, dungeons, and nightmarish beasts.
Since its release in 2022, the game has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and collected over 400 Game of the Year awards — making it one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful games of the decade. Translating that world to film is an enormous creative undertaking, and one that requires both the visual imagination and the narrative discipline that Garland has consistently demonstrated throughout his career.
Character details for the film adaptation have not yet been revealed, which means fans will have to wait a little longer to discover how the game’s universe has been reimagined for the screen.
Mark the Date: March 3, 2028
A24 has set a theatrical release date of March 3, 2028 for Elden Ring — giving Garland and his team ample time to bring this vast and complex world to life with the care and craft it deserves.
For gaming fans, fantasy lovers, and cinema audiences alike, this is one of the most eagerly anticipated projects currently in production anywhere in the world. With a visionary director, an exceptional cast, a generational source property, and A24’s track record of delivering genuine cinematic events, the expectations could hardly be higher.
The Lands Between are coming to a cinema near you.
