The 79th Annual Tony Awards delivered one of Broadway’s most celebrated nights in years. Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman dominated the evening with six awards — the most of any production this season — while Schmigadoon! won Best Musical and Liberation took Best Play. Pink hosted the telecast from Radio City Music Hall on June 7th in a performance that had the audience on its feet before the first award was announced.
Pink descended from the rafters dressed as Peter Pan, offering snatches of beloved shows before joining Neil Patrick Harris and most of Broadway for a rewritten version of Lady Marmalade — new lyrics by Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and Mark Sonnenblick — that set the tone for an evening of genuine spectacle. Performances from all nominated musicals and revivals followed throughout the night, alongside a Book of Mormon reunion celebrating 15 years, a Chicago tribute marking 30 years, Rachel Zegler performing What I Did for Love for A Chorus Line‘s 50th anniversary, and Leslie Odom Jr. leading the In Memoriam segment with Without You from Rent.
The Night’s Big Winners
Death of a Salesman swept the revival categories and beyond, claiming Best Revival of a Play, Best Direction of a Play for Joe Mantello, Best Featured Actor in a Play for Alden Ehrenreich, Best Featured Actress in a Play for Laurie Metcalf, Best Scenic Design of a Play for Chloe Lamford, Best Lighting Design of a Play for Jack Knowles, and Best Sound Design of a Play for Mikaal Sulaiman. Six awards in total — the most dominant performance of the season.
Schmigadoon! won Best Musical alongside Best Book of a Musical for Cinco Paul, Best Original Score for Cinco Paul, and Best Orchestrations for Doug Besterman and Mike Morris — four awards that validated what many had predicted would be the season’s crowd favourite.
Ragtime and The Lost Boys each took four awards. Ragtime claimed Best Revival of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical for Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch, Best Actress in a Musical for Caissie Levy, and Best Sound Design of a Musical for Kai Harada. The Lost Boys won Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Ali Louis Bourzgui, Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Shoshana Bean, Best Scenic Design of a Musical for Dane Laffrey, and Best Lighting Design of a Musical for Jen Schriever and Michael Arden.
Cats: The Jellicle Ball took three awards — Best Choreography for Omari Wiles and Arturo Lyons, Best Costume Design of a Musical for Qween Jean, and its Best Direction win shared above.
In the acting categories, John Lithgow won Best Actor in a Play for Giant — a role that also earned him an Olivier Award in London — while Lesley Manville took Best Actress in a Play for Oedipus, similarly double-honoured across the Atlantic. Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy swept the musical acting categories for their performances as Coalhouse Walker Jr. and Mother in Ragtime.
Bess Wohl’s Liberation won Best Play in what was a meaningful moment for a limited-run drama that had also taken the Pulitzer Prize. Fallen Angels won Best Costume Design of a Play for Jeff Mahshie. Becky Shaw took Best Featured Actor in a Play for Alden Ehrenreich. Giant won Best Actor in a Play for John Lithgow. Oedipus won Best Actress in a Play for Lesley Manville.
