Britney Spears is facing a criminal charge in California after prosecutors filed a misdemeanour DUI count against the pop icon following her arrest last month. The charge marks a serious new chapter in what has been a turbulent period for the 44-year-old star.
What Is Britney Spears Charged With?
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office filed one misdemeanour count of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs against Spears on Thursday. The charge stems from her arrest on March 4th, when authorities pulled her over on a Southern California highway after reports that she had been driving her BMW erratically at high speed.
Her representatives did not hold back in their initial response to the incident, describing her behaviour as “completely inexcusable.” Spears reportedly checked herself into a rehabilitation facility shortly after the arrest.
What Happens at Her Court Date?
Spears is scheduled to appear for arraignment next Monday morning, though she is not required to show up in person given the nature of the charge. Her legal team will make that call.
The district attorney’s office confirmed that a misdemeanour DUI with no crash, no injury, and no prior offences of this kind typically carries no jail time. Prosecutors in such cases usually offer defendants the option to plead guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs — and that option will be made available to Spears.
If she accepts, she would likely face 12 months of probation, mandatory completion of a DUI programme, and payment of fines and associated fees.

What Did Her Representatives Say?
Following the March arrest, a representative said Spears intends to comply fully with the law and expressed hope that the incident could serve as a turning point. “Hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the statement read.
The representative added that her sons will be spending time with her, and that loved ones are working on a plan to support her wellbeing going forward.
Who Is Britney Spears?
Spears is one of the best-selling music artists in history, with a career spanning more than two decades and global hits including Baby One More Time, Toxic, Womanizer, Gimme More, Stronger, and Everytime. She is a mother of two sons.
Her life has played out publicly in ways few artists have experienced. From 2008 to 2021 — a period of 13 years — Spears lived under a conservatorship, a legal arrangement that handed control of her finances and personal decisions largely to her father. The arrangement sparked a global fan movement and intense legal battles before a judge finally terminated it in November 2021.
The DUI charge arrives during what sources close to the situation describe as a difficult period for the singer, and those around her are said to be focused on getting her the right support.
