Taylor Swift Makes Surprise SNL Appearance as Dakota Johnson’s “Literal Therapist” in Monologue

Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live on Saturday night, crashing host Dakota Johnson’s opening monologue in a scene that had been widely predicted after Swift appeared at the VMAs last week alongside Johnson and dropped enough hints for fans to decode.

Johnson opened her monologue by joking about her failed relationships with musicians before introducing what she described as “my literal therapist.” Swift appeared onscreen to immediate screaming — one fan on X described it as a “Taylor Swift jump scare” — and immediately clarified the terms of their friendship.

“I’m not your therapist, actually. You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some. You flop on my couch and overshare and every so often I say ‘Damn, that’s crazy.'”

Johnson interrupted: “Sleepover — yay!”

Swift: “Then I give you Pedialyte and my security drives you home.”

Later in the monologue, with Swift still beside her, Johnson picked up the thread about musicians — joking that dating them was “a public service” because it saved other women money on antidepressants — before landing on “Cleveland” as a punchline. Swift’s immediate response: “Allegedly.”

At the curtain call, Swift returned one more time, carrying a blue and white birthday cake for Johnson, who turned 37 on Sunday.

Context and Chemistry

The SNL appearance was widely anticipated after Swift took part in an elaborate Law & Order: SVU sketch at the Emmys — with a large Saturday Night Live emblem prominently visible on a bulletin board behind her in the scene. She and Johnson have been publicly connected since Johnson appeared in the music video for Swift’s new single “Patient Zero,” which premiered at the VMAs last Sunday and which Swift wrote, directed, and starred in herself. The video pairs Johnson and Colin Farrell as a couple whose marriage is in trouble, with Swift appearing as a spectral figure warning Johnson’s character based on her own past experience.

Johnson’s monologue itself included jokes about her “Fifty Shades” franchise past, the notorious flop of Madame Web, her new psychosexual thriller Verity, and two “very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians” — a reference to Chris Martin and Role Model — before closing with “Looking for a third.”

Swift’s last on-screen appearance on the show was in October 2023, when she came on to introduce Ice Spice. Her only time hosting was in 2009. She has appeared as musical guest multiple times and made monologue cameos in 2014 and 2015. Saturday marked her return to Studio 8H.

Musical guest for the episode was punk band Turnstile.
