WWE Star Ludwig Kaiser Arrested in Florida and Released on Bond Before Return to Work

WWE star Marcel Barthel — known to wrestling fans as Ludwig Kaiser and more recently as El Grande Americano — was arrested in Florida this week on a misdemeanour battery charge. Barthel, 35, was booked into Orange County Jail before being released on $1,000 bond, according to an arrest affidavit and multiple reports.

Barthel was allegedly involved in an altercation with another man before his arrest on Wednesday. His attorneys filed a motion the same day requesting permission for the wrestler to travel outside the country for work purposes. Barthel had flown back to Florida specifically to turn himself in. WWE has not yet issued a public comment in response to the arrest.

Who Is Ludwig Kaiser?

Born in Germany, Barthel joined WWE in 2017 after building a reputation on the European independent wrestling circuit — specifically Westside Xtreme Wrestling and Progress Wrestling — as one of the most technically gifted performers of his generation. He joined the WWE Performance Center in the summer of 2017 and made his debut on the NXT brand a year later.

He became best known as a founding member of Imperium, the dominant faction led by Gunther that also included Fabian Aichner — later rebranded as Giovanni Vinci before his release from the company. Barthel won two NXT Tag Team Championship reigns as part of the group before his character was repackaged.

His most recent reinvention saw him take on the El Grande Americano persona following an injury to Chad Gable. Since Gable’s return, the two have operated as rival versions of the same character — the Original El Grande Americano versus Barthel’s El Grande Americano — building toward a mask versus mask match at Noche de Los Grandes on May 30th. Barthel has also performed for Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide in recent months.

The arrest comes at a significant moment in Barthel’s career, just days before one of his most high-profile matches. His legal team’s move to secure travel permissions suggests the expectation is that he will compete as scheduled.
