The 78th Emmy Award nominations have been announced, and two shows have staked early claims on the biggest prizes of the night. The Pitt leads the drama field with nominations including Best Drama Series, Best Lead Actor for Noah Wyle, and a remarkable sweep of the supporting actress categories. Hacks paces the comedy field with nominations including Best Comedy Series, Best Lead Actress for Jean Smart, and multiple supporting nods for Hannah Einbinder and Megan Stalter.
The ceremony takes place Monday September 14th at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, airing live on NBC and Peacock at 8pm ET. It will be hosted by Mariska Hargitay — the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years. Nominations were announced Wednesday morning by previous Emmy winners Liza Colón-Zayas and Jeff Hiller alongside TV Academy chair Cris Abrego.
This year’s field covered 555 submitted programmes across 14 categories — down 7.5% from last year’s 600 entrants. Notable absences include Heated Rivalry, which was ruled ineligible due to the absence of a US production partner, and Jon Hamm, who was disqualified from the The Morning Show guest actor category due to a submission error.
The TV Academy introduced several rule changes this cycle, including merging talk and scripted variety back into a single “outstanding variety series” field — now designated as an “area” award where nominees independently try to achieve 90% voter approval, potentially producing multiple winners from the same category. The former TV movie category has also been renamed “outstanding movie.”
